What Happened?

On March 5, 2024, a significant plumbing issue was discovered at Fire Station 420. A sewer pipe from the upstairs bathrooms had been leaking behind the kitchen cabinets. While this may have started as a slow issue over time, it worsened dramatically that afternoon.

Our team responded immediately, bringing in a plumber who has stopped the leak and repaired the pipe. A professional restoration company is also on-site to assess and address the full extent of the damage.

Due to the nature of the issue, the station must be completely vacated for health and safety reasons. Prolonged exposure to the affected areas poses a risk to firefighters working and living at the station.

What Happens Next?

Before demolition work can begin, an asbestos test is required by law. Pending results, demolition is expected to start on March 7. Repairs will involve:

  • Removing damaged kitchen cabinets, the oven, and possibly the flooring
  • Addressing any further damage found
  • Repairing the impacted decontamination room and adjacent walls

Will Emergency Services Be Affected?

No. Public safety remains our top priority. While Station 420 is being restored, our fire crews and emergency response apparatus are temporarily relocating to Station 410 to ensure continued service. If you call 911, you will receive the same fast and professional response as always.

Why Does the Station Need to Be Vacant?

This is not just a routine plumbing issue—this situation presents a significant health and safety concern for firefighters. The leak has affected critical areas where crews eat, sleep, and work. Out of an abundance of caution, the station must be unoccupied until restoration is complete.

Who Is Paying for the Repairs?

Benton County Fire District 4 carries insurance coverage, meaning these repairs will not create an unexpected financial burden on the district or taxpayers. This allows us to move forward with the necessary work quickly and efficiently.
